0815 Went to general quarters.

0822 Received signal; enemy consisting of two carriers on course 135.

0855 Went to course 180. Speed 30.

0900 Hornet commenced launching planes.

0902 Enterprise commenced launching planes.

0931 Observed white smoke from Yorktown group. Smoke persisted; apparently engineering casualty.

1010 135 planes in the air c/c 240 c/s 25. Carriers refilling flight decks.

1020 Our fighters reported a one engine, two float plane bearing 180T, 70 miles.

1026 Signal prepare repel attack. It did not materialize. Formed cruising disposition 11-V-speed 25. Received report: 8 Japs downed by Midway AA. Received report: 8 Jap cruisers on course 080, 20 miles west of Midway.

1130 Bandits reported bearing 250T, low on water, c/c 100 carriers launching and recovering planes (relieving combat patrol).

1154 Turned to 260 c/s 25.

1203 Turned to 285.

1208 Received report: I enemy plane bearing 160T, 25 miles. Fighters ordered to attack immediately.

1214 Received report: our torpedo planes attacking enemy. Battleships B-17’s attacking cruisers.

1220 Fighters reports: “Here they come.”

1240 Bandit with wheels down reported 270, 12 miles. Fighter after him.

1241 Turn 135, c/s 27.

1246 Enterprise relieved combat patrol.

1249 Director I reported dog-light—150 relative, 19,000 yards in clouds.

1256 Turned 285T, c/s 25, we turned on.

1302 SKI-aft reported: Plane with pontoons 159°.

1325 Plane crashed dead astern. Plane landed in water attempting to land on carrier.

1352 Friendly planes returning from 090°.

1358 Many Bogies reported 255°.

1359 Bogies or Bandits reported bearing 345°, 5 miles.

1400 Received report 20 bandits, 30 miles (no bearing).

1401 Received report bandits 245°, 30 miles at 10,000 feet.

Signal: prepare to repel attack.

1402 Received report attack breaking lip.

1408 Observed attack on Yorktown group on port quarter. That group firing.

1409 Observed attacked plane falling near Yorktown in flames.

1415 Received reports of attacking groups at several points.

1416 Saw shells burst on horizon near Yorktown. Saw columns of smoke at 290T and 320T.

1420 Six planes reported on horizon near Yorktown. Saw columns of smoke.

1421 Smoke observed at 1416 persisting; appears to be ship burning. 3 Bogies reported relative, at 110 rel.

6 planes hovering over Hornet, preparing to land.

1425 Smoke increasing.

1427 Plane crashed landing on Enterprise.

1432 Report plane 235T, believed to be enemy. (It was not.)

1433 Vincennes, Pensacola, and two destroyers ordered to aid Yorktown. Yorktown planes ordered to land on Hornet.

1447 Smoke reported on horizon, 090 and 100 rel. Did not make it out.

1452 Yorktown fire appears under control.

1452 Dog-fight 210 rel.

1457 More smoke from Yorktown. She reports self in pretty good shape.

1525 Arrived vicinity Yorktown. Smoke coming from her stack, and starboard side of her hangar deck....Reports suicide bomber hit her just abaft island.

Director 11 reports dog-fight 150.

1549 Plane landed in water beside carrier, astern Astoria.

Boat waiting for him.

1556 Another SPD landed in the water.

1600 Yorktown ahead at 5 knots.

1605 Fighters ordered to get a bomber.

1609 Fighters reported: “Got it.”

1626 Making 17 knots on course 090, Yorktown setting speed. Report: 16 planes Task Force, 15 landed at Midway.

1637 Prepare to repel attack.

1640 Yorktown launching her planes.

1641 Commence firing. Planes press in attack. We open fire on planes beyond carrier. Two or three torpedoes hit the Yorktown.
